Chapter 7

"You are a fool to think that any of our people would even agree to such a thing," Rebecca said, her voice taut with suppressed pain.

Samuel cast a worried glance at her, and then added, "Try as you wish, Brian, but you will get nowhere."

Brian laughed condescendingly, and pulled a small recording device from his case and turned it on to the play-back mode. He watched with a smirk as the two listened in dismay to the recording of his earlier phone conversation.

"Greeth? This is Brian; you might remember me as R." The bitterness in the tone was clear, "However, that's beside the point. To put it clearly, if you want Agents Rebecca and Samuel alive, you'll meet me- alone and unarmed- four hours from now, in the back parking lot of the bakery that just closed down last week. Try any tricks or show up with the wrong information, and they're dead."

A long pause followed before Greeth's voice could be heard. "I'll be there."

Brian's smirk, however, deepened while he watched Rebecca's expression melt as she struggled to remain conscious. "Brian… you know more then you say," she slurred.

Brian tensed, his expression firmly closed for a moment. "Feeling a tad out of control, Rebecca?" Brian asked a moment later. "I had hoped we'd reach this point soon. You see, I still remember the time when you and your friends drugged me."

Samuel shook his head in confusion, and then turned to watch Brian warily. "Mistake….help gone wrong."

"Mistake or not, it's your turn now, Rebecca," Brian continued, a gleam in his eyes. "Time to start talking; things aren't as finished between us as you may think."

He paused for a moment, watching her wide eyes follow his every move. With no
warning, he swung around, landing a blow to Samuel's temple, knocking him out cold. "Now that he's out of the way, we can really get down to business."

Once more, Brian reached into his case, this time withdrawing another needle. With slow, cautious moves, he filled it halfway with a clear liquid before piercing Rebecca's swollen arm with it.

Whatever control Rebecca had managed to retain since the initial overdose evaporated within moments.

"Answer me this... that day when you drugged me, what did you hear?" Brian asked, his tone cold and demanding.

"Love. Me.  The secrets you told me alone." Rebecca said, angered at herself, but yet unable to stop herself. She could feel herself slipping, ever closer to unconsciousness, and longed for it.

"And tell me now, Rebecca," Brian continued, his tone curious. "Do you still harbor that love that I once had for you?"

"...Yes." Rebecca breathed.

Brian smiled faintly in triumph as he sat back, "Know this then, dearest Rebecca: it
is gone. There was never anything between us, nor will there ever be."

In the few seconds that Rebecca remained conscious, Brian saw the look of deep hurt that filled her eyes, and laughed.

After a time, he returned the various items to his case before leaving the room, and those unconscious within it.

Once sure of his weapons and surroundings, he took a back route to the parking lot, wondering why Greeth had agreed so readily.  After one last glance at his security system- which showed that nothing was amiss, he stepped out of the door into the abandoned parking lot.

"He's on the way out." The  command sounded in the earpieces of C2's team members, "Attack squad move on first sight! Rescue move in when the door's open- we could lose Rebecca!"

For a moment, there was silence, and utter stillness, but as soon as the door slid open, the five men leaped into action, quickly overcoming Brian before he had chance to react.  He found himself in handcuffs not unlike the ones that he had used to secure Rebecca and Samuel. When he attempted to speak, he instantly found himself gagged, and blindfolded. That, he thought to himself, was quite unnecessary , but C2's efficiency did not allow him the luxury of expressing that thought.

The moment that the doorway was clear, a second part of the team launched into action,  hurrying down the hall to the room where Rebecca and Samuel lay unconscious.

"The door's not rigged," one person said, "Rebecca was kind enough to check that one out before the last mission."

" Just break it down if you can't unlock it." Beth said from headquarters as she  watched the screens before her with growing concern. "I need to get Rebecca back here ASAP!"

"Right, we're on our way," The third team member replied as they lifted the two
agents onto stretchers and hurriedly carried them out of the complex.
